RESOLUTION 2008 - 14

A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE ELKINS POLICE
DEPARTMENT TO PROVIDE A SCHOOL RESOURCE
OFFICER TO ELKINS PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT TO
BEGIN August 1, 2008 AND ENDING June 30, 2009.

WHEREAS, the Elkins Police Department has been contacted by Elkins Public Schools
concerning the sharing of a school resource officer for the Fall 2008 semester and for the Spring
2009 Semester which ends June 30, 2009.
WHEREAS, the Elkins Police Department fully encourages and supports the presence of
a school resource officer at the public schools in Elkins.
WHEREAS, Elkins Public Schools is willing to share the costs of the school resource
officer for the 2008/2009 school ending June 30, 2009, and the City is in support of this ~ffort to
reinstate a school resource officer in the local schools.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ELKINS CITY COUNCIL That,

From and after passage of this Resolution, Elkins Public Schools and the Elkin's Police
Department will agree to a Guideline for sharing between Elkins Public Schools and Elkins
Police Department of one School Resource Officer (SRO hereinafter); this agreement shall run
from August 1, 2008, through June 30, 2009. The salary, benefits, equipment and training
expenses of the SRO shall be shared with Elkins Public Schools paying seventy-five percent
(75%) and Elkins Police Department paying twenty-five percent (25%) during this period. The
Elkins Police Department shall provide a patrol unit for use of the SRO within Elkins, travel
outside Elkins at the request of either pmiy shall be paid by the requesting party, except travel for
training which shall be shared equally.

Although the Elkins Police Department will have use ofthe SRO during emergencies and
non-school periods ofthe year, the Police Department has agreed to the above cost sharing with
the School District during this term. Further evaluation and calculations may be required if the
program is continued beyond the end of this year.
